Here's a Creative Exercise for you.
Next month, the His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama is coming to New York. How should he mark the occasion? How can he connect with a younger market?
I suggest that he get a tattoo. As you can see, he has plenty of room on his arm. And not only that, check out the clothes he wears: his apparel leaves lots of room for either a bicep tat or a shoulder one (or both!).
Here's my question for you: what tattoo would you recommend for the Dalai Lama? The tattoo can be permanent (ink) or temporary (henna).
(He probably won't get a Chinese symbol, or maybe he would.)
Note: I saw the Dalai Lama in 1976 in Pomona, California. My wife Wendy has heard him two additional times: in 1989 in San Diego and in 2005 at Stanford. Interestingly enough, Wendy gave him a Creative Whack Pack in 1989 and the next day he won the Nobel Peace Prize. Coincidence? Or something more cosmic?
Since Buddhists frown on tattoos, I suggest the Dalai Lama should get a permanent tattoo of Calvin urinating on the word TATTOOS.

Tim: That's a good one. Oh the cosmic irony!

The D-L always looks so happy. Why not a smiley face tattoo? That would be so cool. You'd smile every time you saw him.

I believe that the infinity symbol is what fits best: he will reincarnate infinite times; he "sells" the idea of infinite love. Infinity means the endless, the eternal, the limitless, ...
What if he combines the infinity permanent tattoo with a temporary one? He could use a word in Esperanto every month for a different message: peace, love, happiness, etc. So he could proclaim a month of Infinite Love, of Infinite Peace, Infinite Joy, etc.
Always fun this kind of exercises! Thanks!

How about a swastika? Before you jump to conclusions, hear me out. Before the Nazis appropriated this symbol in the 1920s, the swastika was used for thousands of years in the Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions. It has also been used by the Chinese, Navajos, and the Celts. The term "swastika" is derived from Sanskrit "svasti," meaning "well-being" (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika).
Only someone with the moral authority of the Dalai Lama would be able to help purge this respected eastern symbol of the evil and hateful associations created by the Nazis.
How's that for "out of the box" thinking?

He should get the Bill Murray line from "Caddyshack":
"Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness."
so he'll have that going for him...which'll be nice.

Randy: : - )
Jorge: The DL would become an ongoing and changing "message" bearer.
Rachel: That's a very different thought. But you're right about the DL's moral authority: no one would confuse him for a skinhead.
Alex: One of the all-time great deadpan lines in comedy.

Mark: "All things are temporary" as a tattoo!
Peter: Nice kitty!
Ranen: Thanks for the link.
Patti: Yes, indeed!

In keeping with the cosmic irony initially suggested, it might be more tasteful to have a tattoo that says "Leviticus 19:28"...
Posted by: Charles Meyrick | 25 September 2007 at 09:09 AM
Charles: "Leviticus 19:28": Which the New American Standard Bible (©1995) translates as:
'You shall not make any cuts in your body for the dead nor make any tattoo marks on yourselves: I am the LORD.
Thanks! (Nice irony.)

"This Too Shall Pass"
"Love"
"Be the Change You Want to See in the World" -Gandhi
"om"
he could use white ink which would make it invisible unless up close.
Or maybe we should all just tatoo an image of the Dalai Lama's example on our own minds.
